Traditionally, birthstones are associated with months of the year and the astrological signs of the Zodiac. The origin of these is believed to date back to the biblical Aaron, older brother of Moses and Levitical leader of Israel, whose breastplate contained twelve gemstones which represented the twelve tribes of Israel. They were originally dictated by God to be ruby, topaz, emerald, turquoise, sapphire, diamond, jacinth, agate, amethyst, beryl, onyx, and jasper.  Later translations from the Hebrew identify the twelve stones as sard, peridot, emerald, turquoise, lapis lazuli, moonstone, hyacinth, agate, amethyst, chrysolite, carnelian, and jasper.

In 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers met in Kansas and officially adopted a standardized list of birthstones. This list was updated in 1952 and again in 2002; Britain has its own standardized list of birthstones in 1937. Additionally, a Hindu text dating from 1879, lists gemstones for each month also.

The current American list of Birthstones is as follows:

There are a number of myths and legends relating to the powers of birthstones. Folklore and stories from antiquity to today describe healing powers of crystals and gemstones. According to these, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month increases its powers for healing. For example, amethyst is said to promote balance and peaceful inner strength; citrine promotes abundance; garnet is a blood tonic; pearl is calming; and peridot alleviates anger and jealousy.

A birthstone or birthstone-inspired item of jewelry is the perfect gift: for a birth, christening, birthday, Christmas, or any special occasion. Some women may even prefer to buck the trend and have their engagement ring reflect their birthstone.
